Sponsored by the Texas Forestry Association, Forest Awareness Tours began in 1990 to offer students an opportunity to explore the forest community where they live. Forest Awareness Tour activities are designed to introduce students to a variety of forest management issues including fire control, wildlife habitat, manufacture of forest products, soil and water conservation, and human dependence on renewable resources through hands-on activities or field investigations.
Target audiences and partnering organizations vary depending upon community needs. Teachers receive a packet of pre-visit and post-visit activities correlated to TEKS, background information about Texas forests and related classroom resources.
Forest Awareness Tours are hosted by Texas Forest Service foresters and other natural resource professionals throughout East Texas. Interested teachers should contact the Texas Forest Service Forest Informational Officer or their area Forester. For more information, visit the Texas A&M Forest Service website.
